Speaking during his regular press conference, the EU's chief negotiator said there is "nothing surprising whatsoever about the EU's priorities" which haven't changed since 2017. A trade agreement must go hand-in-hand with fair, mutually agreed standards; a long-term agreement on fishing and no cherry picking when it comes to the Single Market, he said. "Brexit means Brexit," Mr Barnier added. "There is nothing tactical about this." The two sides have remained entrenched in their positions on fisheries and the level-playing field for many months. The growing political crisis over rising numbers of migrants crossing the Channel is also thought to have played a part in the stand-off, despite not featuring formally. Brussels is said to be playing hard to get on the matter. Although no breakthrough was expected during this set of talks, the time in which a deal can be secured is running out, with the EU setting the deadline of October. Read the latest updates below.
