Several proposals to raise taxes have leaked from the Treasury in recent days, with sources suggesting the public could see rises in corporation tax, national insurance contributions and fuel duty, and a raid on pensions. Mr Johnson is facing opposition from Tory backbenchers over the proposals, and is set to meet disgruntled 2019-intake members from "red wall" seats this afternoon. Treasury officials are understood to be pushing for the raft of measures in an attempt to recoup some of the budget deficit created by the coronavirus crisis. But the Work and Pensions Secretary on Wednesday suggested lowering taxes, rather than raising them, could be the way to raise more money. Therese Coffey told Times Radio: "In the past, when we have actually cut tax rates, we have seen taxes increase. Tax rates are a very dynamic situation, and we need to make sure the Chancellor has the best opportunities when he announces to the country. "In the past, when some people might assume the only way to get tax up is to increase tax rates. Actually, we have shown in our economic history the opposite." Follow the latest updates below.
