David Beasley, the executive director of the World Food Program, a United Nations branch, said billions of dollars are needed to fight off “famines of biblical proportions in 2021,” according to The Associated Press. The World Food Program received the Nobel Peace Prize last month in recognition of its efforts to fight the surge in food insecurity unleashed by the coronavirus crisis. Beasley said that it was particularly valuable for his organization to receive the award amid a cascade of distractions, including the U.S. election.
