Former Vote Leave spokesperson Lee Cain tipped as Boris Johnson's new chief of staff

Former Vote Leave spokesperson Lee Cain tipped as Boris Johnson's new chief of staffBoris Johnson is poised to appoint Number 10's head of communications as his new chief of staff, it was reported last night. Lee Cain, the former Vote Leave spokesperson during the Brexit referendum is to be promoted according to a report in The Times which Downing Street did not deny The promotion to the top of 10 Downing Street would mark an astonishing rise for Lee Cain, who was working as Mr Johnson's press aide when he was a lowly backbencher just two years ago. The appointment would risk inflaming tensions with backbench Tories frustrated with Downing Street's communications operation during the Covid-19 crisis. Some have been urging Mr Johnson to appoint a former or serving MP to the position of chief of staff to help build stronger links between Mr Johnson and Tory backbenchers. Last night Mr Cain did not return calls about the report. A spokesman for 10 Downing Street said: "No comment."
